Program Design

The development of appropriate programming for high ability students must include:

  • A researched based program.
  • A written statement of philosophy, goals, and objectives to meet the needs of high ability students
  • A licensed gifted/talented Coordinator
  • Gifted and talented/high ability professionally developed and/or licensed teachers
  • A broad-based planning committee that meets regularly
  • Programming for high ability students must be an integral part of the general education school day.

Rather than any single program for high ability learners, a comprehensive K-12 program providing a continuum of services needs to be developed and include:

  • Early identification and intervention of high ability students from low economic environments, Limited English Proficiency, with learning or other disabilities, or cultural differences
  • Guidance, counseling and support for high ability students who are underachieving or who have other at-risk behaviors to help them reach their potential.
