Kathryn Meyer Scholarship Fund
Kathryn Meyer knows everyone. For twenty years, she spent her days working for the North Spencer School Corporation as the receptionist. She saw the times change and a new school built before retiring. While working at the school Kathryn gained a love for students and faculty. She loved to attend sporting events and support the school as a whole. That’s why Kathryn created the Kathryn Meyer Scholarship, in order to give back to the school she loved.
On the scholarship, Kathryn placed two requirements: the student needs to make good grades and has to be a member of either St. Joe’s Catholic Church or Mary Help of Christians Church. The second stipulation comes from Kathryn herself being a member of Mary Help of Christians. For 81 years she has attended service at MHC; it is a part of her family’s history. Her grandparents donated one of the stained glass windows in the building. Those windows and the church mean a lot to Kathryn, so when the match program began, she decided to build a fund around keeping the church looking it’s best.
Kathryn believes in supporting the community, whether it’s by donating money or attending sporting events. She has done this for all her life and she does not plan on stopping any time soon.

David L. Schlacter Memorial Scholarship Fund
Many students called Mr. Schlacter their best teacher. They remember him as always having a smile on his face. He put joy and humor into his classrooms; anyone could tell that Mr. David Schlacter loved teaching. He taught in North Spencer for 35 years with 13 of those years being in administration and 10 years teaching at Nancy Hanks Elementary School. In 2003, he retired at the age of 63. The following year in August, Mr. Schlacter contracted leukemia, and passed away that October.
His wife, Christine, and their children decided they wanted to do something to keep David’s memory alive. They had read and knew about the idea of funds, and they believed it would be good to start one in David’s name. The family created the David L. Schlacter Memorial Scholarship Fund which benefits the Heritage Hills High School Scholarship Fund. The stipulations on the scholarship are few and far between. The student need only be from Nancy Hanks and do well in academics. Going into the field of teaching is preferred, but not required. The main purpose of this scholarship is to continue to help students succeed, just like Mr. Schlacter did when he was teaching. Even today, Mr. Schlacter is helping students achieve their goals and realize their dreams, the sign of a great teacher.
